Innovator Founder Visa UK

Woman describing business plan in the UK

Overview

The Innovator Founder Visa allows eligible entrepreneurs to set up and run an innovative business in the UK.

To apply, your business idea must usually be endorsed by an approved endorsing body. The business must be innovative, viable and scalable, and you must be actively involved in developing it.

This route can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain after 3 years if you meet the requirements, but it is not suitable for every business idea. The endorsement stage is one of the most important parts of the process.

🎯 Who This Visa Is Best For

The Innovator Founder Visa is best for entrepreneurs who want to build a genuine, innovative business in the UK.

It may suit you if you have a strong business idea, can show that it is viable and scalable, and are ready to be actively involved in running the business.

It is less suitable for ordinary self-employment, freelance work, small local businesses or passive investment.

💡 A Quick Note from Kris: I would not treat this as a simple “start any business in the UK” visa. The endorsement is the key part. Your idea needs to stand out as innovative, realistic and capable of growth.

✅ Innovator Founder Visa Eligibility

To qualify for an Innovator Founder Visa, you usually need an eligible business idea and an endorsement from an approved endorsing body.

The business must normally be new, innovative, viable and scalable. You must be actively involved in the day-to-day development and management of the business. Home Office guidance says it is not enough to only have a financial interest in the business.

You must also meet the English language requirement, be at least 18 years old, and have enough money to support yourself if this applies to your circumstances.

💡 Business Idea and Endorsement

The endorsement stage is central to the Innovator Founder route.

Your business idea usually needs to be assessed by an approved endorsing body. They will look at whether the idea is innovative, viable and scalable, and whether you are suitable to develop the business in the UK.

GOV.UK says an application must be supported by an endorsement letter from an endorsing body or legacy endorsing body, and the endorsement letter must be dated no more than 3 months before the visa application.

There is no fixed minimum investment amount, but you may still need to show that you have enough funding to make the business realistic.

🏢 Approved Endorsing Bodies

An endorsing body is an organisation approved to assess Innovator Founder business ideas.

You should only use organisations listed by GOV.UK as approved endorsing bodies. GOV.UK says an organisation can only issue an endorsement if it is on the official list.

You normally pay the endorsement fee directly to the endorsing body. GOV.UK lists the endorsement fee as £1,000 per person, plus £500 for each mandatory contact point meeting after approval.

🗣️ English Language Requirement

Most Innovator Founder Visa applicants need to prove their knowledge of English unless they are exempt.

You may be able to prove English through an approved Secure English Language Test, an eligible academic qualification, or nationality from a recognised majority English-speaking country.

Do not assume IELTS 7.0 is required for this route. Check the current GOV.UK rules and accepted evidence before booking a test.

⏳ How Long Can You Stay?

The Innovator Founder Visa is usually granted for 3 years.

You may be able to extend for another 3 years if you continue to meet the rules. GOV.UK says there is no limit on the number of times you can extend this visa.

💼 Can You Work on This Visa?

You can work for the business or businesses you have set up in the UK.

You may also be able to do other skilled work, but you must follow the conditions attached to your visa. The main purpose of the route is to develop the endorsed business, so you should remain actively involved in it.

If your business changes significantly, you may need a new endorsement before continuing under the route.

👨‍👩‍👧 Can You Bring Family?

Your partner and children may be able to apply as dependants on an Innovator Founder Visa if they meet the requirements.

Each dependant normally needs their own application and must pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.

If approved, their permission will usually end on the same date as yours.

🏠 Does the Innovator Founder Visa Lead to ILR or British Citizenship?

Yes. The Innovator Founder Visa can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain after 3 years if you meet the settlement requirements.

This is one of the faster work/business routes to settlement, but it does not mean settlement is automatic. You will need to show that the business and your activity meet the rules at the time you apply.

After ILR, some people later apply for British citizenship if they meet the naturalisation requirements.

💡 A Quick Note from Kris: The 3-year route to ILR sounds attractive, but the business evidence matters. Keep strong records from day one, including business activity, growth, funding, customers, accounts and contact with your endorsing body.

💰 Innovator Founder Visa Cost

The current Home Office application fee is £1,357 if applying from outside the UK, or £1,693 if applying from inside the UK. These fees also apply to dependants.

You must usually also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. For adults, this is normally £1,035 per year, so a 3-year visa can mean £3,105 in healthcare surcharge.

You also need to budget for endorsement-related costs. GOV.UK lists the endorsement fee as £1,000 per person. If your visa application is successful, you must also attend at least two contact point meetings with your endorsing body, usually costing £500 per meeting.

📃 Documents You May Need

The documents you need depend on your circumstances and your endorsing body.

You will usually need your endorsement letter, a valid passport or travel document, proof of English language ability, and financial evidence if required.

You may also need bank statements, tuberculosis test results if required, proof of relationship for dependants, business documents requested by the endorsing body, and certified translations for documents not in English or Welsh.

Because the endorsement stage comes before the visa application, check the endorsing body’s document requirements early.

🧭 How to Apply

The process usually starts with preparing your business idea and seeking endorsement from an approved endorsing body.

If your business is endorsed, you can then apply online for the Innovator Founder Visa. You will need to pay the application fee and healthcare surcharge, provide documents and prove your identity.

Depending on your passport and circumstances, you may prove your identity using an app or by attending a biometrics appointment.

You should not travel outside the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man while waiting for a decision if you apply from inside the UK, as your application may be withdrawn.

⏱️ Processing Times

After you apply online, prove your identity and provide your documents, decisions are usually made within around 3 weeks if you apply from outside the UK.

If you apply from inside the UK, decisions usually take around 8 weeks.

Processing can take longer if your documents need extra checks or your case is complex.

✈️ What Happens After Approval?

If your Innovator Founder Visa is approved, you can come to the UK and begin developing your endorsed business.

You will usually need to meet your endorsing body at required contact points during your stay. You should keep clear records of your business development, finances, customers, activity and any changes to the business.

Your first steps may also include arranging accommodation, opening a UK bank account, getting a UK phone number and understanding business setup requirements.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is assuming this visa is suitable for any business idea. The idea usually needs to be innovative, viable and scalable.

Another mistake is underestimating endorsement. The endorsing body is not just a formality; it is central to the route.

Some applicants also forget the full cost of the route. Alongside the visa fee and healthcare surcharge, you may need to pay endorsement and contact point meeting fees.

It is also important not to treat the business as passive investment. You must be actively involved in developing and running the business.
