The Hong Kong BN(O) Visa is best for eligible British National Overseas citizens from Hong Kong and family members who want to build a life in the UK.

It may be useful if you want to work, study, start a business, move with family, or plan towards settlement in the UK without needing a sponsored job offer.

💡 A Quick Note from Kris: This route is very different from sponsored work visas. If you qualify, the main planning questions are usually around family, cost, accommodation, schools, work and long-term settlement rather than finding an employer sponsor.

✅ Hong Kong BN(O) Visa Eligibility

To apply as the main applicant, you usually need to be a British National Overseas citizen from Hong Kong.

GOV.UK also says that if you are the child of a British National Overseas aged 18 or older and were born on or after 1 July 1979, you can apply separately from your parent. Your family members can also apply with you.

You normally need to show that your permanent home is in Hong Kong if applying from outside the UK, or in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Hong Kong if applying from inside the UK.

You must also be able to support and accommodate yourself and your family members in the UK, normally for at least your first 6 months.

👨‍👩‍👧 Can Family Members Apply?

Yes, eligible family members may be able to apply with you under the BN(O) route.

This can include a partner, children and certain other family members, depending on the circumstances and the version of the route being used.

Each family member normally needs their own application and must pay the application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.

If you are moving with children, it is worth planning schools, accommodation, healthcare and family costs before you travel.

💼 Can You Work or Study on a BN(O) Visa?

Yes. The BN(O) Visa gives broad work and study rights in the UK.

You can work in most jobs, be self-employed, study or start a business. You do not need a Certificate of Sponsorship and your employer does not need to sponsor you.

This makes the route more flexible than sponsored work visas such as Skilled Worker.

🏠 Does the BN(O) Visa Lead to ILR or British Citizenship?

Yes. The BN(O) route can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain.

You can usually apply for settlement after 5 years in the UK if you meet the residence and eligibility rules. GOV.UK says the settlement application currently costs £3,226 per person and decisions usually take up to 6 months.

After ILR, some people later apply for British citizenship if they meet the naturalisation requirements.

💡 A Quick Note from Kris: If settlement is your long-term goal, keep records from the start. Addresses, work history, travel dates, school records, family documents and visa documents may all become useful later.

💰 Hong Kong BN(O) Visa Cost

The BN(O) Visa application fee depends on how long you apply for.

Current Home Office guidance lists the fee as £206 for 30 months of permission or £285 for 5 years of permission. The fee applies to each applicant.

You must also usually pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. For adults, this is normally £1,035 per year. This means a 5-year visa can involve a large upfront healthcare surcharge.

If family members apply with you, each person usually needs to pay their own visa fee and healthcare surcharge.

📃 Documents You May Need

The documents you need depend on your circumstances.

You will usually need a valid passport or travel document, proof of your BN(O) status if you have it, evidence of your permanent home, and documents showing you can support and accommodate yourself and your family in the UK.

You may also need tuberculosis test results if required, proof of relationship for family members, birth or marriage certificates, and certified translations for documents not in English or Welsh.

If you are applying as the adult child of a BN(O) citizen, you may need documents proving your relationship to your BN(O) parent and your date of birth.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

A common mistake is assuming the BN(O) Visa is only about the application itself. For many families, the bigger challenge is planning the move, including housing, work, schools, childcare and cost of living.

Another mistake is using outdated fee information. The application fee is relatively low compared with many UK visas, but the Immigration Health Surcharge can still be expensive, especially for families.

Some applicants also underestimate the importance of keeping records for settlement. If you plan to apply for ILR after 5 years, keep evidence of addresses, absences, family documents and immigration status from the beginning.

It is also important to check whether you are applying as a BN(O) citizen, a family member, or an eligible adult child of a BN(O) citizen, because the evidence can differ.
