🎯 Who This Visa Is Best For
The High Potential Individual Visa is best for recent graduates from selected overseas universities who want to live and work in the UK without needing employer sponsorship first.
It may suit you if you want time to explore the UK job market, gain work experience, build professional contacts or look for a sponsored role later.
It is less suitable if your main goal is immediate settlement, because the route itself does not directly lead to ILR.
💡 A Quick Note from Kris: I would treat the HPI Visa as an opportunity window. It can get you into the UK without a sponsor, but if you want to stay long term, start looking at Skilled Worker sponsorship early.
✅ High Potential Individual Visa Eligibility
To qualify for the High Potential Individual Visa, you usually need to have been awarded an eligible qualification by an eligible overseas university in the last 5 years.
The qualification must be equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree, UK postgraduate degree, or UK PhD/doctoral qualification.
You also need to meet the English language requirement, have enough money to support yourself if required, and must not have previously been granted permission under the Student Doctorate Extension Scheme, Graduate route or High Potential Individual route.
🎓 Eligible Universities and Qualifications
The university rule is one of the most important parts of the HPI Visa.
Your university must appear on the Global Universities List for the exact month and year when your qualification was awarded. GOV.UK publishes lists for each qualifying period, such as 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026, 1 November 2024 to 31 October 2025 and earlier years.
This means it is not enough for your university to be famous or highly ranked now. It must be on the correct list for the year you graduated.
You will usually need Ecctis to confirm that your overseas qualification is valid and equivalent to the required UK level.
🗣️ English Language Requirement
Most HPI Visa applicants need to prove their knowledge of English unless they are exempt.
You may be able to prove English through an approved Secure English Language Test, an eligible academic qualification, or nationality from a recognised majority English-speaking country.
Do not assume IELTS 7.0 is required for this route. Check the current accepted evidence before booking a test.

⏳ How Long Can You Stay?
The length of your HPI Visa depends on the qualification you were awarded.
If your eligible qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or postgraduate degree, you can usually stay for 2 years.
If your eligible qualification is equivalent to a UK PhD or other doctoral qualification, you can usually stay for 3 years.
You cannot extend this visa. If you want to stay longer, you will need to switch to another visa route if eligible.
💼 Can You Work on This Visa?
Yes. You can work in most jobs on a High Potential Individual Visa.
You can look for work, work full-time or part-time, be self-employed or do voluntary work. You do not need employer sponsorship.
You cannot work as a professional sportsperson. If you want to stay in the UK after your HPI Visa ends, you may need to switch to another route, such as Skilled Worker.
👨👩👧 Can You Bring Family?
Your partner and children may be able to apply as dependants on your HPI Visa if they meet the requirements.
Each family member usually needs their own application and must pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
If approved, their visa will usually end on the same date as yours.
🏠 Does the HPI Visa Lead to ILR or British Citizenship?
No. The High Potential Individual Visa does not directly lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain or British citizenship.
It is a temporary route. However, it can still be useful if you want to gain UK work experience and later switch to a route that can lead to settlement, such as Skilled Worker.
💡 A Quick Note from Kris: This is similar to the Graduate Visa in one important way — it gives you time in the UK, but you still need a longer-term plan if your goal is settlement.
💰 High Potential Individual Visa Cost
The High Potential Individual Visa application fee is currently £937.
You must also usually pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. For adults, this is normally £1,035 per year. This means the healthcare surcharge is usually £2,070 for a 2-year visa or £3,105 for a 3-year visa.
You may also need to pay Ecctis to check your qualification. Your dependants, if applying, usually need to pay their own visa fee and healthcare surcharge.
📃 Documents You May Need
The documents you need depend on your circumstances.
You will usually need a valid passport or travel document, proof of your qualification, Ecctis confirmation that your qualification is valid and at the required UK level, proof of English language ability, and financial evidence if required.
You may also need tuberculosis test results if required, proof of relationship for dependants, and certified translations for documents not in English or Welsh.
🧭 How to Apply
You apply online for the High Potential Individual Visa.
Before applying, check that your university is on the correct Global Universities List for the month and year your qualification was awarded.
You then need to get your qualification checked by Ecctis if required, prepare your documents, complete the online application, pay the visa fee and healthcare surcharge, and prove your identity.
Depending on your passport and circumstances, you may use the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attend a biometrics appointment.
⏱️ Processing Times
After you apply online, prove your identity and provide your documents, you’ll usually get a decision within around 3 weeks if you apply from outside the UK.
If you apply from inside the UK, decisions usually take around 8 weeks.
Processing can take longer if your documents need extra checks or the Home Office asks for more information.
✈️ What Happens After Approval?
If your HPI Visa is approved, you can come to the UK to live and work during your visa period.
Your first steps may include arranging accommodation, getting a UK phone number, opening a bank account, understanding transport and starting your UK job search.
If you want to stay in the UK long term, start researching future routes early. For many HPI holders, the next step may be finding a licensed employer that can sponsor a Skilled Worker Visa.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
A common mistake is checking the wrong university list. Your university must be on the Global Universities List for the month and year your qualification was awarded, not just the current year.
Another mistake is assuming the HPI Visa can be extended. It cannot, so you should plan your next step before the visa ends.
Some applicants also assume that any overseas degree qualifies. The qualification must meet the UK equivalency rules and come from an eligible university.
It is also important to remember that this visa does not directly lead to settlement.
